Linda C. Beresford
Linda C. Beresford is a partner with Opper & Varco LLP, where she practices environmental law and civil litigation.
Ms. Beresford's specializes in the redevelopment of brownfields properties, including advising clients on acquisition of contaminated properties, working with regulators to implement clean up strategies for brownfields sites, and negotiating terms for redevelopment projects involving contaminated properties. Ms. Beresford also has an active civil litigation practice, which provides assistance to both public and private entities to recover clean up costs from responsible parties under both state and federal law. Ms. Beresford was co-counsel on two appellate cases which lead to significant published decisions about the Polanco Redevelopment Act. Ms. Beresford also litigates other land-use matters and has an active federal civil litigation practice involving claims under federal environmental statutes.
Prior to joining private practice, Ms. Beresford was a law clerk for a Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California where she prepared bench memoranda and drafted opinions. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Beresford was an environmental consultant with Kleinfelder, Inc., where she focused on environmental compliance issues and underground storage tank regulations. Ms. Beresford also conducted property assessments for commercial transactions and to assist in developing remediation strategies.
Ms. Beresford is admitted to the California Bar, and the Eastern, Central and Southern Federal Districts of California. She is a member of the Federal Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, and is a former member of the Louis M. Welsh Inn of Court. Ms. Beresford is also a member of the California Redevelopment Association Brownfields Committee.
Ms. Beresford received her J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, where she served as an associate editor for the Ecology Law Quarterly and as a director of the Public Interest Task Force, and graduated Order of the Coif..
